Enjoy an Eggcellent Easter

This year Easter is quite ‘late’.  It happens over the weekend of 18 to 21 April. This is because it literally is a ‘moveable’ feast, because the date each year is set by the lunar calendar. In simple terms, Easter takes place on the first Sunday after the first full Moon that happens after the spring equinox.

The equinox falls on March 20/21, so that means the Easter celebrations can be as early as the end of March or as late as this year.  There’s still time to arrange an Eggcellent Easter at your Beach Hut!

Ancient festival

Although today Easter is known as an extremely important part of the Christian calendar, its origins can be traced back to an earlier era.

The annual celestial solstices have continued to play a role in feast days and celebrations throughout human history. It’s interesting to note that the word Easter is similar to, and some say derives from, the German word Ostern. In turn, this comes from Ostara, the Anglo-Saxon name for Goddess of Spring.

Four-day weekend

Easter is special in the UK because both the Friday and the Monday are Bank Holidays, making it a four-day weekend. This allows beach hut owners to really go to town and make the most of the chance to bring friends and family together.

This year’s Easter is a good month into spring giving us the best hope we’ve had in a long time for good weather – much more likely that when it falls in late March. The clocks will have changed to British Summer Time, the evenings already feel much lighter and longer and the days will hopefully be warmer soon too.

All in all, the date of Easter this year looks set to give us a perfect backdrop for creating a fun scenario for all ages at our palaces on the prom.

Egging on

Ancient German myths connect Ostara to eggs, which is how we find ourselves with the most common image of our modern Easter – and let’s face it, who doesn’t like a chocolate Easter egg?

There’s more to the idea though, as ‘Egg Hunts’ have become increasingly popular in recent years. Chocolate eggs are more suited to being the reward than the object of the hunt, so decorated eggs of all kinds come into play. Hidden indoors or out, you can make up your own rules to suit the participants. Egg Hunts on the prom provide a wealth of options to provide interesting hiding places and clues and you can send out personalised invites by phone.

Food and drink

Every feast day celebration has to include food and drink.  Anyone organising a good beach hut gathering knows this all too well. Unlike Christmas there isn’t really a set culinary concept for Easter (apart from eggs) so once again your imagination can really be put to good use.

Depending on your culinary skills you could try cooking up fresh spring time ingredients for salads, quiches, tarts and homemade lemonade – or you could order yourself an indulgently sweet hamper to enjoy while everyone else is off hunting eggs!
