Love Books, Love Beach Huts

Love Books, Love Beach Huts!

Book Lovers’ Day

Book Lovers’ Day is celebrated every year on 9 August and it’s a great thing to join in with.  What better way to celebrate – Love Books, Love Beach Huts!

Many people associate their beach hut with reading a good book.  This could be whilst sitting out in the sun or sheltering inside from the wind and rain. So having a focus day to highlight the importance of reading for all ages is worth writing about.

With so many distractions in modern life, most of them involving glowing screens of one size or another, it can be a real joy to kick back with a book.

Better still, beach huts even have their own famous books and writers, making it easier to choose a guaranteed good read for all the family.

Veronica Henry

Veronica Henry has written a series of successful books based around beach huts.

Working on the classic BBC radio series ‘The Archers’ and writing for TV shows like ‘Heartbeat’ and ‘Holby City’ taught her about the importance of having an escape from everyday life for most people. As a result, and having written more than twenty novels, her seaside experiences come from living on the north Devon coast and starting most days with a walk on the beach.

Veronica’s ‘Beach Hut’ series started in 2010 with ‘The Beach Hut’. The most recent was ‘A Wedding at the Beach Hut’ published in 2020. The books revolve around a row of beach huts and the secrets of the families who own them. With vivid descriptions and great characterisations Veronica paints a picture of the comings and goings of life at beach huts over long, lazy summers that any fellow hut owner will resonate with.

I had the pleasure of chatting with Veronica Henry in 2021 on my podcast – ‘Let’s Talk Property’.  Find out the appeal of beach huts and the seaside that makes us Brits go wild for these properties on the prom. Veronica shares what she would do if she were appointed the UK’s first ever ‘Beach Hut Minister‘.

Cathy Watts

The whole idea of ‘screen time’ is a constant challenge for kids.  Therefore, anything that can get them into the habit of reading books from an early age has got to be a good idea. Thankfully, Cathy Watts has written a series of book aimed at children from five upwards.  And anyone of any age who loves the seaside can read them too!

Cathy has lived in Hove for thirty-five years and has her own beach hut and shares seaside adventures with her son about treasures on the beach like crab claws, shells and sea glass.

Her ‘Sandies‘ books feature colourful and mostly cheerful characters who live underneath our beach huts and come out at dusk for their adventures. These stories are inspired by her own experience along our local beaches.  The ‘Sandies’ series contain original short stories which combine detailed observations and a magical sense of humour. Illustrated by watercolour artist Emma Ball they really are classic books for children and perfect for the family-orientated nature of beach huts.
